Aspirin (also known as acetylsalicylic acid) and anti-inflammatory products slow down your body’s ability to form blood clots. This increases the chance of bleeding. Having a procedure and taking certain medicines places you at risk for bleeding. Therefore, you have to stop taking any products that contain these drugs before hand. Your doctor will tell you if you must avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatory products (NSAID’s) such as Ibuprophen. If you are having a procedure you muststop taking:
• Aspirin and products containing aspirin 7
days before the procedure.
• Anti-inflammatory products 7 days
before the procedure.
Many over-the-counter and prescription medicines contain aspirin or NSAID’s. Enclosed are lists of common medicines containing each of these drugs. While these lists contain the most common products, they are not all-inclusive. Please check with your pharmacist or primary care doctor if you have any questions.
